Do you own a Shure Beta 181 with cardioid, super-cardioid or bi-directional capsule? If you want to make a recording with a fair bit of ambiance, you are better off going for an omnidirectional capsule. This capsule and others are separately available, so you are as flexible as can be with this 181 series of components. An omnidirectional capsule may be well suited for ambiance, but large ensembles of string instruments can also be recorded with this excellent model. It also does a fair job as a drum overhead.
